TURTLES, REEFS AND ISLAND LIFE

Comoros Wildlife

This 9-day Comoros expedition starts and ends in Moroni, taking you into one of the Indian Ocean's least-visited island countries. You will split your time between Grand Comore and Moheli, traveling by vehicle, boat, and ferry while looking for green turtles, dolphins, tropical fish, Livingstone's flying foxes, lemurs, and the everyday rhythms of island communities that still feel wonderfully unpolished.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Mwali Marine Life
Snorkel coral reefs with tropical fish, rays, turtles, and dolphins nearby.
  • Livingstone Flying Fox
Hike rainforest trails to spot one of the world's largest bats.
  • Itsamia Turtles
Watch green turtles nest on one of Earth's busiest turtle beaches.
  • Baobab Seafood Lunch
Eat fresh local seafood at a tiny seaside spot under a baobab.
  • Village Warmth
Meet Comorians, walk gardens, and see how island food is grown.
  • Moroni Medina
Wander old lanes, carved doors, markets, and the oceanfront mosque.
This is a rare, conservation-focused island trip for travelers who like wildlife with a little adventure around the edges. Comoros is not polished or crowded, and that is exactly why it feels so memorable.

Tour program
  • Karibu, and welcome to Comoros. When you arrive at Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport, a shared group transfer will take you to the hotel. Your adventure officially begins with a 6 pm welcome meeting, then you may want to have dinner in the hotel grounds and start getting a feel for this rarely visited island nation.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel - 1 night
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Included activities
    • Complimentary Arrival Transfer
  • Special information
Please attend the welcome meeting so insurance and emergency contact details can be collected. Provide flight details at booking, or at least 14 days before travel. Tonight's hotel has several amenities, including a restaurant; outside the hotel, restaurant choices and tourism infrastructure are very limited.
  • Head north into the jagged volcanic landscapes of Grand Comore, where your guide shares local stories tied to Dos du Dragon, Lac Sale, the Miraculous Mosque, and Trou du Prophete. Lunch is served at Miki's, a rustic seaside spot tucked under a baobab tree. Afterward, kick off your shoes at Maloudja Beach, relax under coconut palms, or go for a swim in the Indian Ocean.

  • Meals
    • Breakfast
    • Lunch
  • Included activities
    • Moheli - Ylang-Ylang Farm Visit
    • Moheli - Village walk
  • After breakfast, take the ferry to Moheli. In 2020, the island and surrounding waters became the Mwali Biosphere Reserve, protecting an extraordinary mix of marine and forest life. Drive through rainforest and turquoise coastal views to your beachfront stay, then head out on a village walk to meet local people and learn about daily life in this remote fishing community. You will also visit a ylang-ylang plantation and distillery, where your guide explains how the fragrant oil is produced.

    • Breakfast
    • Lunch
    • Dinner
  • Special information
Travel time is approximately 3.5 hours. On Moheli, you may see people feeding lemurs or offering whale-swimming experiences. Please avoid these activities, as wildlife should be viewed respectfully in natural habitats.
  • Take to the blue-green waters for island hopping and snorkeling inside the biosphere reserve, an area known for exceptional marine diversity. See the cliffs and frigatebirds of Magnougni Island, then stop at uninhabited Ouenefou Island to snorkel over colorful coral reefs. A barbecue picnic lunch is cooked for you on the island before you return to the lodge. Later, meet a National Park Ranger for a talk about Moheli National Park's biodiversity and conservation work.

Spinner and tropical spotted dolphins are often seen here year-round, and from mid-July to October, humpback whales migrate through the warm, shallow waters around Moheli to give birth. If the season lines up, you may even see mothers with calves. Back at the lodge, have lunch and enjoy a free afternoon. Seychelles fruit bats, with wingspans up to 80 cm, are often visible around the lodge grounds.

This critically endangered species is found only on Moheli and neighboring Anjouan. Follow a stream toward the mountains as your guide points out medicinal trees, spices, coffee, and fruit trees, then climb steep sections to see the bats sunning themselves and circling on morning thermals. Return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Begin with an eco-guard presentation about the village, its history, its turtles, and the conservation work happening here. More than 20,000 green turtles nest on these beaches each year, and nesting can happen almost every night. Walk through the village, visit turtle nests, and after dinner return to the beach in hopes of seeing adult turtles come ashore or hatchlings make their first dash to the water.

  • Say goodbye to Moheli and take the ferry back to Grand Comore. Lunch is at a local resident's home, where you can see how the meal is prepared and take part in the process. Continue to Iconi, the ancient sultan's capital, set below a steep volcanic cone with a powerful history. Walk past the sultan's palace, coral-limestone buildings, and bangwes, the open spaces where men still gather for community debate. Back in Moroni, stroll the oceanfront near the Old Friday Mosque, wander the medina's narrow lanes and carved doors, then finish at the market before a final beachside dinner with your group.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Comoros is still far from mainstream tourism, which is part of its charm and also part of the reality of traveling here. You will need patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor when plans move slowly or infrastructure feels limited. Accommodation is among the better options available in the areas visited, but standards may be simpler than travelers expect in more developed beach destinations. Medical facilities are limited, especially on Moheli and smaller islands, and the group spends time in remote places without easy access to major services. You should be in excellent physical health and speak with your doctor before traveling if you have ongoing illnesses or injuries.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.
Accommodation
Hotel (3 nights), Basic Beach Bungalow (1 night), Lodge (4 nights). Accommodation descriptions are a guide, and similar alternatives may be used if availability is limited. Early check-in cannot always be guaranteed, even when properties are asked to prepare rooms in advance, so luggage may be stored while the group explores. Tourism infrastructure in Comoros is very limited, and even the top local hotels may feel simpler than properties in more established destinations.
