Tour program
  • Ciao and welcome to Venice! Get ready to lose yourself in a city that floats between dreams and history. With its maze of canals, stone bridges, bell towers, and centuries-old palaces, Venice feels like it’s been paused in time for half a millennium. Your Italian journey officially kicks off at 6 p.m. with a welcome meeting. If you arrive earlier, take a relaxed wander on your own — maybe stroll across the famous Rialto Bridge, peek into little artisan shops selling Murano glass and handcrafted masks, or simply follow the curve of the Grand Canal and soak up the view. After meeting your group this evening, you might want to grab dinner together at a cozy neighborhood trattoria and start getting to know your fellow travelers.
  • Accommodation

    • Ca’ D’Oro (Franchetti Gallery) – 15€
    • Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th-Century Art – 11€
    • Murano Glass Museum – 11€
    • St. Mark’s Basilica Museum – 5€
    • Scuola Grande di San Rocco – 14€
  • Special information
It’s important to attend the welcome meeting at the beginning of your trip — during this time, your leader will collect your travel insurance and emergency contact details. If you think you might arrive late, please let your travel agent or the hotel reception know in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a note posted in the lobby for details about the meeting’s time and location.

Venice is one of Italy’s busiest destinations, and some attractions can sell out fast. If you’d like to visit St. Mark’s Basilica or climb the Bell Tower, it’s a good idea to book tickets early at www.basilicasanmarco.it.

If you plan to explore the Doge’s Palace, we recommend scheduling your visit today (if you’re staying longer in Venice) or tomorrow after 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at palazzoducale.visitmuve.it.
  • Wake up surrounded by water and history — today you’ll really get to know Venice. Start your morning with an easygoing orientation walk, weaving through narrow lanes and over stone bridges as your leader points out the city’s mix of Classical, Gothic, and Baroque architecture around St. Mark’s Square. Along the way, you’ll stop for a taste of cicchetti, those bite-sized Venetian snacks locals love to pair with a glass of wine. For lunch, maybe join the chatter at a traditional bacaro, or grab a table by the canal and enjoy some people-watching with your meal. The rest of the day is yours to explore however you like. Venice moves at its own rhythm — you either walk or float, and that’s part of its charm. You could hop on a vaporetto to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, climb its bell tower for sweeping lagoon views, or, if you haven’t yet, check off a bucket-list dream with a gondola ride along the Grand Canal.

  • The small town of modern Pompeii has a wonderful Old Town square – the perfect place to spend some time with the locals, drink an authentic Italian coffee and watch the world go by. Today’s highlight is a guided tour of the ruins of ancient Pompeii. Until 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving Roman trading centre, but it was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying 2000 people and their homes under a layer of ash. The city was never rebuilt and largely disappeared from people’s minds until the ruins were rediscovered in the 18th century. Immaculately preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets, providing insights into how Romans lived, worked and interacted 2000 years ago. The remainder of the day is yours to relax, or if you like, you can visit the nearby Herculaneum, renowned for its fossilised archaeological treasures.

  • A private transfer will take you up the mighty Mt Vesuvius this morning, where you’ll meet a local volcanology guide. Ascend to the summit of Mt Vesuvius for staggering 360-degree views over the Bay of Naples and into the steaming crater. Although Mt Vesuvius is still considered to be an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1944 and there's no sign of lava. See firsthand the awesome power of the volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. In the afternoon, travel by private vehicle to the resort town of Sorrento. People have been coming to the peninsula and islands of the Sorrento region for at least 2000 years. There are many options in this small seaside town with its fine piazzas, maze of old streets, sidewalk cafes and shops. The area is famous for its lemon groves, which produce the famous limoncello liqueur. Consider heading out to try some tonight.

The final ascent of the volcano must be made on foot via a steep but well-made trail of volcanic ash and gravel. The ascent takes around 45 minutes, and wearing comfortable closed shoes is essential. Those who suffer from vertigo may prefer to opt out.
  • You have a free day to explore the cliffside town of Sorrento today. Maybe stroll along the marina or cool off in the waters of the small beaches. Visiting Capri is another option, accessible by a hydrofoil. Natural grottoes dot Capri’s rugged coastline, while inland, narrow roads wind through fragrant citrus groves and past villages of flat-roofed white houses. In Capri, you can take a boat trip to the Blue Grotto (La Grotta Azzurra), where the water shines with an extraordinary blue translucence – a result of the refraction of the sunlight outside. End the day the Italian way with a demonstration of Gelato making with your group.

  • Arrive on the Amalfi Coast after a short journey by private vehicle. The Amalfi peninsula is a land of rocky coasts, cliff-top vistas, azure seas, tiered lemon groves, whitewashed villages and bright blue skies. If you're after a relaxing walk with a few cultural highlights, stroll from one side of Amalfi town to the other and visit the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and the Chiostro del Paradiso. If you want something more active, maybe embark on a walk through the Valley of Mills. Alternatively, catch a bus up the Valley of Dragons to reach Ravello. For centuries, its lofty position and sunny, dry climate have made it an appealing place for writers, artists, musicians and travellers. Tonight, you'll stay in Minori, just a 15-minute bus ride from Amalfi (the bus fare is included). Unlike bustling tourist hotspots, Minori offers privacy and equally breathtaking views while being just a short walk from the beach.

Your leader will take you for a half-day hike along the narrow trail of the famous Sentiero Degli Dei (the Path of the Gods) which, until quite recently, was followed by mules and donkeys as they traversed the dramatic landscape. This path winds its way through unique scenery and boasts unrivalled views along the coast. Walk through forests and fields of wildflowers, olive groves and vineyards, past ancient stone huts and beside sheer walls of granite. See the local farmers tending their crops by hoe and herds of goats feeding beside the trail. The trail ends in Positano, where there will be ample time to explore and maybe take a dip in the sea. Return to Minori by ferry and bus. As tonight marks your final evening together, maybe gather your fellow travellers for a celebratory feast to cap off your Italian

Before you book you should know
  • The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train, offering fast travel across long distances without traffic delays, delivering you directly into city centres. Trains are comfortable and equipped with toilets but can be busy.
  • Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the trains, as well as up and down stairs at stations and hotels. Please ensure your luggage adheres to our weight and size guidelines outlined in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Summer temperatures in many visited regions can exceed 40c, so protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated. Keep in mind that July, August and early September constitute high season along the Southern Italian coast, impacting local infrastructure due to increased visitor numbers.
  • Hotel rooms in Europe may differ from American or Australian standards, often featuring two single beds that can be pushed together instead of a double and shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.
  • For those with extra time, consider extending your trip to explore more of Italy. Explore further south into the heel of Italy with our ‘Rome to Southern Italy’ trip (trip code ZMSSC) or head down to Sicily with our ‘Rome to Sicily’ trip (trip code ZMSFC).

OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE BASIS
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.

Important notes
1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. Please note that the physical rating for this trip is set at 2. While this is correct for the overall trip, there are some components that are of a higher physical rating. Both the climb to the summit of Mt Vesuvius and the hike on the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) require a certain amount of fitness. Please read the day-to-day itinerary carefully or speak to your leader for more details. Activities can be opted out of if you don't want to participate.
3. You don't have a lot of time in Rome at the start of the trip, so if you're keen to explore this spectacular city in depth we recommend you arrive a day or two before the start of the trip, especially if you would like to see the Vatican Museum as it is closed most Sundays.
